FernCare Free Clinic Has New Home In Downtown Ferndale
FERNDALE (WWJ) - A free health care clinic has opened shop in south Oakland county. The FernCare Free Clinic-- which has been a set-up-tear-down clinic for more than a year-- now has a permanent home in Downtown Ferndale.
Ann Heler, the clinic's board president, says FernCare was borne out of a major need for a free clinic in that particular area.
"There is just nothing in the strip of south Oakland county - northern Wayne county ... nothing, there are not free clinics of any kind," said Heler.
"Big funders want you in a permanent place ... so we are now becoming eligible for grants ... it means we don't have to bring everything to a place ... see patients for three hours and then move everything!" said Heler.
Right now the FernCare Free Clinic sees about 200 patients and is open twice a month. Heler says the new permanent location will make the clinic eligible for bigger grants that she hopes will allow that number to increase.
