Dozens Of Detroit Schools Closing Early Thursday Due To Extreme Heat

DETROIT (WWJ) - Dozens of Detroit schools are closing early Thursday due to the extremely hot temperatures.

Temperatures are expected to rise above 90 degrees and stay there for the rest of the week. A heat advisory goes into effect at 1 p.m. Thursday.

Kiera Williams, an 11th grader at the Detroit International Academy for Young Women, was ecstatic to hear about the early dismissal.

"For me, I can't really focus [when it's hot in the building]. I like to be comfortable when I do my work," Williams told WWJ's Vickie Thomas. "So when it gets real hot, I'm not really focused on my work as I want to be. So I think it's a good idea that they're doing this."

Eleanore Shantay, Williams' grandmother, said she doesn't mind picking her up from school early, even if she can't relate.

"When I was young, we didn't have air conditioning," she said. "But, you know, the weather is changing. It's a lot hotter now and the humidity and everything is higher."
