Downriver Man Sentenced To Prison In Death Of 4-Year-Old Daughter

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A 26-year-old Downriver man has been sentenced to at least six years in prison in the death of his 4-year-old daughter last year.

Demar Canada learned his punishment on Wednesday in Wayne County Circuit Court in Detroit. Records say he earlier pleaded guilty to a manslaughter charge in exchange for murder charges being dropped.

WDIV-TV reports Canada addressed the court before sentencing, saying: "Even though I didn't intend it, I take responsibility for those actions and I deeply regret them." He says the time they spent together "were the best years of my life."

The girl was found unresponsive the morning of May 24, 2015 in Canada's home in 25100 block of Darin Street, near Eureka and Beech Daly roads in Taylor, and was pronounced dead at a hospital.

A medical examiner determined she suffered head injuries from severe head trauma allegedly caused by Canada back in 2011.

After a police investigation that year, Canada pleaded guilty and was sentenced to probation on child abuse charges in connection with injuries suffered by his daughter who was an infant at that time.
