18-year-old man shot by officer during traffic stop on city's east side, Detroit police say

An 18-year-old man is listed in critical condition after he was shot by a Detroit police officer Tuesday night during a traffic stop.

Police confirmed that a shooting occurred at about 9:42 p.m. at Seven Mile Road and Gratiot Avenue.

Police Chief Todd Bettison said officers conducted a traffic stop due to an obscured license plate. The vehicle, occupied by two women and an 18-year-old man, was stopped at a McDonald's.

Bettison said the female driver then consented to a vehicle search.

"When the officers removed the females from the vehicle, they went to remove the male passenger from the vehicle. He resisted, became combative. Officers attempted to deploy their Tasers, unknow if it took effect, but I would say not," Bettison said.

Bettison said the man ran from officers and pulled out a handgun. He said an officer fired a shot, hitting the 18-year-old man in the upper body. It is unknown if the man fired a shot.

The man's firearm has been recovered. Bettison said the two women are being interviewed.

"My sincere prayers go out to his family, but when you pull a weapon on a Detroit police officer, or any officer, these are the type of things that happen," Bettison said.

Bettison said officers have recently been patrolling along Gratiot Avenue to combat crashes.
