CANTON, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) - A popular national chicken restaurant made its Metro Detroit debut Tuesday with the opening of Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers in Canton.

The restaurant at 44218 Ford Road, near Sheldon, was slated to open at 10 a.m. But people waited in the area for hours before then, some with lawn chairs and many of them in winter coats given the weather. The company had announced a promotion to celebrate the opening, with swag gifts for the first ones in line and a drawing for card providing a free combo meal three times a month.

Because of the lines, Canton Police directed traffic into the location from just one of the entrances. Canton Police also issued a social media post Tuesday morning, alerting area residents to expect heavy traffic near the restaurant in connection with the grand opening.

"If you have to travel through the area, please be patient and expect delays or seek an alternate route," police said.

Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers started in 1996 in Louisiana. The location on Ford Road in Canton is the first of its franchise in Metro Detroit and the second in Michigan.

Plans were recently scuttled for bringing one of its restaurants into Chesterfield Township.
