Canadian truck driver caught with 240 pounds of cocaine at Ambassador Bridge

(CBS DETROIT) - A truck driver is facing a federal drug trafficking charge after border security thwarted an attempt to deliver more than 240 pounds of cocaine into Canada.

The charge against Muhammad Shaikh, a Canadian citizen, was filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan in Detroit.

Shaikh is charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine as the result of an investigation and vehicle inspection at the Ambassador Bridge, court records show.

"The volume of controlled substance and the manner in which they were being transported from the U.S. to Canada is indicative of a broader drug trafficking effort," an affidavit from one of the investigating officers said.

The attempted delivery was discovered at about 6 p.m. Tuesday, while the Detroit Contraband Enforcement Team was handling outbound enforcement at the Ambassador Bridge.

The officers spoke with a truck driver approaching the border. The tractor and trailer of the vehicle both had Ontario plates; the driver said he was delivering vehicle parts from Indiana.

Officers directed the driver to a secondary area. He was told to put the vehicle in park and step out of the cab for an inspection.

Officers then found five duffel bags under the bunk in the tractor containing several packages that were vacuum-sealed in plastic. A K-9 team also checked the vehicle and detected narcotics. Once field testing was done, all of the parcels tested positive for cocaine, the court report said.

According to the affidavit, the driver told officers he was in Indiana to load his truck with auto parts. While there, he was approached by a man who asked if he would deliver other packages into Canada in return for payment. He was also given a cell phone at that time.

During the border crossing investigation, CPB officers saw an incoming call on a cell phone via the application What's App; then the cell phone data was remotely erased.
