There's something wicked going on at the Detroit Opera House this winter, as the award-winning musical returns to Detroit. "Wicked" is the prequel to "The Wizard of Oz," and it focuses on who will becoming the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch, when they first meet up in Oz. The musical has won over 50 awards, including three Tonys and a Grammy, and was called "a cultural phenomenon" by Variety magazine. Children ages five and under not admitted, and an open-captioned performance will be held Sunday, December 14 at 7:30 p.m. "Wicked" has a runtime of 2 hours and 30 minutes.

The DFT's Masterpieces of Polish Cinema series involves four days and nine films, which have been selected and chosen by director Martin Scorsese's non-profit, The Film Foundation. It includes many of Poland's great filmmakers, from 1957-1987. Every film has been digitally restored and has English subtitles, and more of these films will be screened in 2015 at the DFT. Tickets are $10 per film and can be bought online.

Zehnder's might be primarily known for its fried chicken, but it also organizes a yearly Snowfest, with many things for both kids and adults to see. For the past 23 years, it has hosted a snow sculpting event, as well as ice carving, and the sculptures are carved with great care and skill. There's also a warming tent, fireworks display, kids activities and a petting zoo. The carvings take place all around downtown Frankenmuth. Park near Zehnder's and take a walk around to see the artists at work and the snow and ice carvings on display.

The Ann Arbor Folk Festival returns to Hill Auditorium this year, and features folk and "roots" music. The music begins at 6:30 p.m. each night, and tickets are on sale at The Ark's website. All proceeds from the festival will go to benefit The Ark, Ann Arbor's "non-profit home for folk, roots, and ethnic music." Tickets are available online this month or at The Ark's box office.

The Moscow Ballet presents the "Great Russian Nutcracker" at the Fox Theater this December. The Dove of Peace, which has a 20-foot wingspan, will be included in the ballet, as well as Russian legends Father Christmas and the Snow Maiden. Keep an eye out for the 10-foot tall silk puppets, as well, and "life-sized Matrushka Dolls." The costumes are very intricate, with many Swarovski crystals. Tickets start at $31.50 and can be purchased online.
