1 Killed, 1 Critically Injured After Car Crosses Lanes, Collides With DDOT Shelter

DETROIT (WWJ) -- Broken glass and twisted framing is all that's left of a DDOT shelter on Woodward and Euclid after a car reportedly careened across several lanes and killed one person and critically injured a second waiting for a ride on New Year's Day.

Debris was strewn 20 feet or more, orange construction barrels and yellow Police tape cautioned drivers on southbound Woodward of the mess in the curb lane and on the sidewalk. A cashier at the Citgo gas station on the corner said that the efforts, however, are not deterring scrapers.

Police say 23-year-old Korey Klimek's vehicle crossed several lanes of traffic before hitting the bus shelter. Police say he was drunk -- and is charged with operating under the influence causing death.

"People have been stealing pieces thinking they can get cash for it," Lakia Man said. Man said that she heard screeching tires and then a loud explosion at the time of the crash.

Test results are expected to determine if the 23-year-old driver from Ferndale had alcohol or drugs in his system at the time of the crash, around 9:30 a.m. Thursday. Police have not released the names of the victims.

The Wayne County Morgue confirmed that a 40-year-old male that was on the shelter at the time is dead. A 22-year-old man who was also in the structure when it was stuck is in critical condition at Henry Ford Hospital. The driver was treated for facial cuts.
