Witnesses Describe Boy Being Struck, Dragged By Truck

WESTMINSTER, Colo. (CBS4)- Witnesses describe a boy struck and dragged by a truck while riding his tricycle as one of the worst things they've ever seen.

"I was holding is artery, it was squirting everywhere, blood everywhere. I was just trying to help him, you know. I did my best until the ambulance got here," said witness John Lahr.

The 7-year-old boy remained at The Children's Hospital after being hit by a truck and then dragged 50 feet.

Lahr said the main injury was to the boy's leg. The dragging left exposed bone in some areas.

The incident happened at about 7 p.m. Monday on West 132nd Avenue in Westminster when the boy was riding a tricycle in the Casa Estates near his home.

"The truck came around the corner right there," said Lahr. "Ran right into him."

"It was a scream that I have never, never heard," said witness Amyber Lahr. "That was bad."

The 48-year-old driver, also a resident of Casa Estates, was arrested for careless driving resulting in serious bodily injury. He was released later Monday night.

"Didn't even seem like he really cared, you know. He was just like, not really coherent about the whole thing," said Lahr. "He didn't have any emotion."

"He looked really weird. He was like, 'I didn't hit a kid, I didn't hit that kid.' We were like, 'Yes, we watched you,' " witness Aymber Lahr said. "The sparks were coming out from his bike which was wedged under there, and that, well, the way he was positioned, that saved his life."

Police haven't confirmed whether drugs or alcohol was involved.

The child's identity and condition haven't been released.
