There is no better way to bond with your child and instill strong core values than to volunteer together. Most non-profit organizations rely heavily on volunteers, and most volunteers find the work rewarding and challenging. Check out these local options to help your family go above and beyond this year.

Habitat for Humanity is a tremendous nation-wide organization with the central mission of building decent, affordable homes for low-income families. Its Youth United program is designed to get kids ages five to 25 involved in this great cause. The younger group will help raise money, assist the crew at the work site and provide help around the office, while ages 16 and older actually help build homes. This is a great opportunity to get a few families together to create a group to participate in the Youth United Program.

Volunteer shifts vary Monday through Sunday hours

The Children's Museum of Denver welcomes family volunteer groups year round. It always welcomes exhibit and craft volunteers, which are a perfect match for families. Exhibit volunteers help test exhibits and guide visitors. Craft volunteers assist visitors with craft activities in the museum playscapes.

Hours: Mon to Sat 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. nightly; Sun 8:30 a.m.. to 1:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The Sacred Heart House of Denver offers services to single women and homeless mothers with children. The home is always staffed by volunteers during set hours and families are encouraged to volunteer together. It provides childcare to residents to allow mothers to attend living skills and parenting classes. Volunteers are encouraged to read, play games and do crafts with the children. In the family dinner program, families are asked to prepare a meal at home and bring it in to Sacred Heart at 5:30 p.m. Volunteers are encouraged to stay for dinner.

The Senior Hub offers services designed to give caregivers a break from their full time care-giving jobs. They also assist seniors with light household chores and tasks.Volunteers help run errands, do grocery shopping, yard work, household cleaning or just provide a friendly visit. The Senior Hub always welcomes family volunteers and is a wonderful way to spend time with your family while helping someone in need.

State parks all over Colorado desperately need volunteers — from park maintenance and construction to greeting park visitors and supporting park staff with educational programming. Once you hit 48 hours of volunteer service, you get a volunteer park pass that allows you entrance to all of the great Colorado state parks. Volunteers ages 12 and younger are welcome with their parents, so this is another perfect family opportunity.
