Roofers Back Bill To Regulate Industry

DENVER (CBS4)- One of the biggest consumer complaints in Colorado is homeowners getting ripped off by shady roofing companies. One lawmaker hopes to put an end to roofing ripoffs.

The roofing industry in Colorado is unregulated.

"Tomorrow, for instance, you could become a roofing contractor and you look like a trustworthy person, but maybe not everyone should have that at their disposal," said President of the Colorado Roofing Association Kirk Tiley.

Tiley said the state makes it too easy for dubious dealers, which is why the industry is backing a bill that would require roofers to be bonded and insured, pass a standardized test and register with the state.

Sen. Lois Tochtrop, D-Thornton, introduced the measure at the request of roofers.

"It will assure people that when they need to get their roofs fixed they will have quality roofers," said Tochtrop.

"You're never going to be able to get rid completely of the weather storm chasers or fly-by-nights, but we're just trying to make improvements here," said Tiley.

Tochtrop has support from roofers, insurers and state regulators.
