Rash Of Burglaries Has Small Businesses In Mountain Communities On Alert

DILLON, Colo. (CBS4)- Investigators are trying to solve a rash of burglaries in Summit County. Thieves have broken into at least three businesses in Frisco and Dillon in recent days. They got away with cash.

Southern Exposure Salon was targeted and sustained a lot of damage for what was taken once the thieves were inside.

"The door was completely shattered, and the door jam was broken," said owner Deanna Campbell.

Whoever broke in ignored pricey items, instead targeting the cash register that contained less than $200.

"It's more a nuisance to everybody. You feel invaded when somebody breaks in here," said Campbell. "It sucks that it has to happen to small businesses in the area because those are the ones that are striving to be open and stay here and that have lived here a long time."

A toy store in Frisco was among those business hit. Authorities said this is the time of year for petty crimes, when seasonal employees leave town with anything they can grab.

"We do see people who come through and are taking advantage of the very trusting population," said Summit County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Tracy LeClair.

Cars are some of the biggest targets.

"Unfortunately, they're leaving their cars unlocked and those are just crimes of opportunity," said LeClair.

Last week, authorities in Eagle County issued a warning about an increase in vehicle break-ins mainly in the Edwards area.
