Police Capture Alleged Gunman Near Castle Rock

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. (CBS4) - As Independence Day came to a close the Douglas County Sheriff's office received a suspicious call.

"It was in reference to a male in the bushes with a gun," Douglas County Sheriff's Sgt. Ron Hanavan told CBS4.

Sheriff's deputies and Castle Rock police were sent to a neighborhood near South Ridge Road, where a gunman opened fire.

"This particular individual fired upon our officers with numerous rounds," Hanavan said.

The alleged shooter -- Lonnie James Pebley, 41 -- shot at three police officers at a home near the Founders Village neighborhood and as police fired back the suspect fled. That prompted a massive overnight manhunt that lasted for seven hours.

A SWAT team joined police in hunting for the man, and Denver and Greenwood Village police also helped out in the manhunt.

"It sounded like fireworks -- then there were some sirens," said resident Mitch Dullek.

During the search emergency officials contacted about 2,000 residences with reverse 911 calls to let them know there was an armed gunman in the area.

On Thursday at about 7 a.m. police arrested Pebley without incident.

Investigators are now trying to determine what caused the gunman to open fire. No one was hurt in the shootings or during the manhunt.
