Organizer Of Event To Show Support Of Police Says 'We Can Be That Extra Set Of Eyes'

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - Dozens of people gathered on the front steps of the Aurora police headquarters Wednesday night with one simple message -- "thank you."

Christopher Pentico organized the event after learning someone had threatened to harm the local officers.

"Imagine one of these guys getting up in the morning and hearing that and saying I've got to go to work today, That's got to be pretty scary," he said.

In response Pentico called on the community to show their support for local officers by joining hands on the lawn and making sure they know they're not alone on the job.

"We can be that extra set of eyes, we can be the extra people out there in the community watching over these guys," Pentico said.

Kathy Forest was among those who showed up. She says like everyone she wanted to support each and every officer but had one in particular to say thank you to -- her son.

"You know being a mother you are concerned when your child is in harm's way every day but they do it because they're selfless," Forest said.

Aurora Police Chief Nick Metz spoke on behalf of all the officers who were there Wednesday. He says it's rare that people gather in front of their department to show support, especially given the current climate surrounding law enforcement, but made it clear that the event was appreciated.

"Know you've probably heard this a million times but I can't thank you enough for what you're doing," Metz said.

Another prayer event is scheduled for Thursday at 8:30 a.m.
