Moreno Blog: 'I'm A Fake Runner'

By Britt Moreno

I'm a fake runner. Casual is maybe a gentler way of putting it. Since I was a teenager I have enjoyed running three, four and within the last year or so five miles. I've never pushed myself past that mile mark and I've never run a race, but I've always wanted to! That's why I am signing up for the Rock 'n' Roll Denver Half-Marathon. The "Run with CBS4" opportunity is the perfect way to make this happen!

I will admit I'm nervous! I blame my adolescence for the lack in confidence. I was far from a jock. I always took dance classes and performed in plays and musical theatre shows. The gym was a foreign place to me, a grassy playing field was unchartered waters. I never logged miles on a track out of fear of others seeing how slow I am!

RUN WITH CBS4: Track Team CBS4

As I've grown older I'm able to run without feeling insecure or worrying about what others think, but I am still bugged by that stubborn voice in my own head saying "are you sure you can do this?"!

I was intimidated when I first met the running instructors at Runners Edge of the Rockies, but right away they put me at ease and taught me a key first lesson. They encouraged me to run slowly, so I can warm up and set myself up to complete a longer run. The first day jitters are now out of the way and I feel a little better about things. I still get overwhelmed envisioning myself completing a ten mile run let alone 13, but I really want to do this and prove to myself I can accomplish this goal. I'm 30 now and I want to push myself out of my comfort zone.

I can tell you running makes me happy. I love how it allows me to get outside and I enjoy running with a friend or running alone. Both enable me to reflect. It was during a run that I realized how much I want this to be a community effort. I asked my producer if it would be alright to document my running journey and to ask for all you to comment as well. I hope you do! Let me know if you are lacing up for the race as well. Tell me how you are doing and feeling and what you think about *our* progress.

If you choose to take on the half with me, the tread on our running shoes will wear out much like that "fake runner" title I bashfully wear now. Soon we'll be the REAL deal: serious runners, motivating each other to reach that 13.1-mile goal. Nothing fake about that. J
