Jury Trial For Teen Charged In Falling Rock Death

A teenager accused of loosening a rock that fell and killed a girl will get a jury trial. Freddie Bailey, 16, is charged with reckless manslaughter.

Prosecutors said he kicked free the rock that tumbled down a hillside and killed 17-year-old Audra Brownell from Michigan. She was on a church trip to Estes Park this last summer.

Bailey pleaded not guilty in a Larimer County courtroom Friday morning. His father and his attorney, Larry Mertes, were in court during his plea.

The judge set a four day trial at the beginning of February for the manslaughter charge.

Bailey lives in Texas. The judge said he doesn't need to be back in court for pretrial hearings, only the trial.

A manslaughter conviction requires a finding of recklessness in Colorado.

Brownell would have been a senior at her high school in Texas where she played flute in the marching band and was also said to be very involved in her church youth group.
