#FreeSamba Campaign For East High Student Heads To Court

By Suzanne McCarroll
DENVER (CBS4)- The East High School student from Senegal charged with using a BB gun to try to rob a fellow student appeared in court on Thursday along with a lot of supporters.

Elhadji Samba Dioum, 19, faces charges of theft, attempted aggravated robbery and menacing. Police say he used a BB gun to threaten a student. The school was on lockout for hours and students had to put into place the "active shooter scenario" they had practiced.

One week later, some students and parents have started a #FreeSamba campaign. The judge in the case, along with the prosecution and defense lawyers say they've been inundated with letters in support of Samba.

"It's an unfortunate incident, it's a life altering incident. He didn't understand the culture and ramifications of this. It's heartbreaking," said East High School Basketball Coach Rudy Carey.

Samba played on his team. Carey said 10 minutes of horseplay may end up ruining a great kid's future.

Vince Buckmelter hosted Samba in his home for several months.

"To know him and understand him is to love him as obviously you can see everyone here does," said Buckmelter.

The conditions of bail for Samba include posting $5,000, giving the court his Visa or passport so he cannot leave the country, having no contact with the victim and wearing a GPS monitor.

Faculty, parents and students turned out in droves to support Samba who is said to be embarrassed that he let so many people down.

A 17-year-old student who police believe brought the BB gun to school has been charged with a felony. His name has not been released since he is a minor.

Samba will be back in court on Jan. 7, 2016. Attorneys have requested a French interpreter since they say he is still learning English.
