Fillmore Plaza In Cherry Creek Getting A Makeover
DENVER (CBS4)- Fillmore Plaza in Cherry Creek North is getting a makeover. The groundbreaking for new construction happened Thursday morning.
"Cherry Creek North is always a ground breaker and always a trend setter," said Cherry Creek North Business Improvement District President Julie Bender.
It's the final phase of an $18 million makeover for the shopping district. Renovation actually began in March 2010 for the rest of the 16 block area. Most of that work was completed in October.
The final phase is the upgrade of the Fillmore Plaza. A small crowd braved the frigid weather Thursday morning for the groundbreaking ceremony.
Speakers included Denver Mayor Bill Vidal and Denver City Councilwoman Jeanne Robb.
"It's such a great jewel to our city. It is no wonder people love coming here and it's been ranked as the number one place to visit in Colorado," said Vidal.
They showed off pictures of what the finished plaza will look like. It includes new trees, special landscaping and lighting, along with new furniture and shade canopies.
The entire design was worked out by the Cherry Creek North Business Improvement District during a year-long collaborative process that included the surrounding neighborhoods.
"It really had to serve many objectives. It had to be a great event space, a great pedestrian space and a great retail area. All of those things in one block," said Bender.
The cost of the project is paid entirely by the CCNBID. No city funds are used.
Construction on the plaza is expected to be completed by the end of June or early July.
