Shelters Opened Stranded Motorists On I-70 Following Large Crashes
SUMMIT COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) - Dangerous driving conditions on Interstate 70 caused a estimated 20-vehicle crash involving a semi truck Saturday afternoon.
Colorado State Patrol says the truck was leaking fuel.
Dozens of stranded motorists waited for hours until crews could clear the mess at mile marker 204. The crash was cleared at around 4 p.m., however eastbound lanes were still closed at Frisco and Silverthorne because of other crashes, CSP says.
CSP advised those drivers to head to the Silverthorne Recreation Center on Rainbow Drive or Summit Middle School in Frisco to help reduce traffic back ups.
It's not clear when those closures will be lifted.
CBS4 viewer Gilbert Ramos shared first-hand video of the massive crash.
CSP and the Colorado Department of Transportation also report several other crashes along I-70 in the high country.
Heavy snow fell for hours causing slick roads and near white out conditions.
At around 4:30 p.m., CDOT announced there were 15 spun out vehicles at mile marker 211, near Silverthorne. They say eastbound lanes are closed.
