DU Gears Up For Presidential Debate, Sends Note To Neighbors
DENVER (CBS4) - The first of the presidential debates is a week away, and it's happening right in Denver.
The debate will take place at the University of Denver on Oct. 3 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. It's the first time a presidential debate has been held in Colorado.
DU sent out a note this week to people who live next to or close to campus with some advance warning about the debate specifics. They included the information that the debate will happen at the Daniel L. Ritchie Center for Sports & Wellness and is expected to draw approximately 4,000 journalists from across the country and around the world.
The following specifics surrounding the debate were included in DU's notification:
From Monday, Oct. 1, through Wednesday, Oct. 3, some areas on campus will be closed. The University of Denver will not hold classes on Oct. 3. Expect some heavy traffic and potential delays on University Boulevard. Please use Downing or Colorado Boulevard as alternate routes.
Sept. 25-Oct. 1: Buchtel Boulevard: South-bound lane (one lane only running west to east) will be closed between High Street and University Boulevard.
Sept. 30-Oct. 4: There will be no parking on the north side of Buchtel from High Street to University Boulevard.
Oct. 1-through Oct. 3: At some point on Oct. 2, Buchtel Boulevard will be fully closed from High Street to University. Asbury Avenue also will be closed from High Street to University.
Additionally, a small section of South York Street, the 2300 block -- between Iliff and Wesley avenues -- will be closed to traffic. There will be no street parking on Oct. 3, starting early in the morning.

Current plans call for the RTD Light Rail system to be operating on Oct. 3. Please watch the RTD website -- rtddenver.com -- for updates to all routes that run through the University area.
Tickets for debate are not available to the general public and can't be purchased. A small number of tickets will be distributed via a random lottery to DU students.
At 6 p.m. on Oct. 3 CBS4 will feature an hour special previewing the debate. Afterwards, CBS4 Political Specialist Shaun Boyd will do a Reality Check of the debate on CBS4 News at 10 p.m.
