Crews Hope To Reopen Highway 50 By This Weekend

COTOPAXI, Colo. (CBS4)- The Colorado Department of Transportation is working to get Highway 50 completely cleared of rocks and reopened by this weekend.

A rock slide closed the road just west of Cotopaxi on Monday. Highway 50 has been closed from the Royal Gorge to Salida.

CDOT has hired crews to complete rock scaling along the area as well as move all the rocks off the road. Rocks are being moved about 12 miles of the slide to a storage area where there is room off the highway.

Repairs to the highway may be necessary, but it's not known how much damage was caused until the rocks are removed. Damage to the road will be assessed on Thursday.

CDOT said it has no idea how much it will cost to clean up the slide and repair the highway.
