Arrest Made In Hit & Run That Killed Motorcyclist
DENVER (CBS4) - An arrest has been made in a hit-and-run crash that killed a motorcyclist.
Police arrested Daniel Kleim, 26, Tuesday afternoon. Investigators say he left the scene after colliding with the victim's motorcycle Sunday night near Federal Boulevard and Virginia Avenue.
CBS4's Tom Mustin happened to be with the victim's family when they found out about the arrest.
Chilling video of the crash captured the last seconds of Abdul Alhilo's life. A surveillance camera at shows a white Jeep Cherokee pulling out of a car wash into traffic, right in front of Alhilo's motorcycle. The 25-year-old then skids moments before slamming into the Jeep. The Jeep continues north on Federal a half a block before the driver, who police believe is Kliem, parks and flees the scene, leaving two passengers inside.
"He is 25 years old and he has bright future in front of him and we lost him," said Salam Alrubaily, Alhilo's brother-in-law.
Alhilo's family members spoke to Mustin from a mosque in Aurora. They say Alhilo came to the U.S. from Iraq 12 years ago along with his 11 brothers and sisters.
"To have better life. We left the country because of Saddam's regime," said Alhilo's brother Mustafa Alhilo.
They say Alhilo always had a smile on his face. He graduated from South High School, worked at King Soopers, and planned to re-enroll at Metro State.
"He wanted to be a general computer engineer," Mustafa Alhilo said.
"He used to be the love of the family. He's always helpful to the family. He put himself second and family first," Alrubaily said.
His family says Alhilo loved to ride his motorcycle and loved the U.S. They say nothing will bring back their brother, but they're hoping the arrest will bring the family justice.
