95 Rescued Animals Arrive In State's Largest Airlift

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (CBS4) - Dozens of rescued animals ready for new homes arrived in Colorado at the Centennial Airport Wednesday afternoon.

It was the largest planeload of rescue animals the state has ever seen, and accomplished through a program called Dog Is My CoPilot.

A total of 95 dogs, puppies, cats and kittens were rescued from a shelter in Roswell, New Mexico, where they had only seven days to be adopted or put down.

Ten shelters from across Colorado were at the airport to receive the animals and will help to spay, neuter, and provide vaccinations for them.

Volunteers will act as foster parents until each animal is adopted, and assisted in the arrival.

"It was amazing. This was a huge flight and we worked with about ten rescues -- dogs from Roswell, New Mexico, all over New Mexico, kill shelters in Texas -- and all of these dogs were on death row and now they're going to find homes. It's been an incredible experience," said Paws On The Ground volunteer Jenifer Koberstin.

"We're just blown away by the community and Colorado in general opening its arms to all of these dogs in need," she said.
