Big Air Comes To Denver

Construction crews are assembling a scaffolding-like steel structure right in the middle of downtown Denver's Civic Center Park. But what are they building?

CBS4's Social Media Team wondered the same thing and asked people outside the City & County Building what they thought was going on.

Big Air Denver is a first-of-its-kind event in the United States. These urban winter sports competitions have been held for years in big European cities.

On January 25 and 26, skiers (Jan. 25) and boarders (Jan. 26) from around the world will perform aerial tricks on this temporary snow ramp and jump. The boarders' event will actually be part of the LG FIS World Cup.

There are also concerts in the park by Switchfoot and One Republic between the preliminaries and finals each evening.

The tower structure's ramp, jump and landing areas will be covered with snow (snow making guns from Copper Mountain will be helping) the weekend before the event.

The competition starts a busy week in Denver for winter sports enthusiasts from around the world. The SIA Snow Show fills the Colorado Convention Center from Jan. 27-30 for the second straight year. The combination of both events is being dubbed the Mile High Snowfest.
