"It's upsetting to learn that these occurrences happened and you're the family that has to lose someone," said an attorney for one of the victims.
Portions of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama are under tornado watches until 11 p.m. local time Tuesday.
The tornado was spotted just before 8 p.m. across eastern New Orleans and St. Bernard Parish. CBS 2 Chief Meteorologist Albert Ramon explains the phenomenon.
Six people including two children have died in a tornado near Des Moines, Iowa.
"This entire facility could have been evacuated when it was believed a tornado was en route. It appears that holiday profits took precedence over safety," Clifford Law Offices partner Jack Casciato said in a statement.
