Police are investigating after a thief shoots open a glass door while attempting to steal jewelry from a store in Uptown Wednesday afternoon.
Duncan Smith, 31, is charged with four felony counts of retail theft and one misdemeanor count of retail theft.
This comes after an alert about other burglaries on the Near North Side, and just after new teeth went to an Illinois law cracking down on retail theft. CBS 2's Tara Molina reports.
Police have connected him to five thefts near Clark and Roosevelt and Sixth on State Street.
As the holiday rush officially begins, the Chicago Police Department is increasing its presence in retail districts across the city.
