Man Killed In Garfield Ridge Fire, Woman In Critical Condition

(CBS) -- An 89-year-old man is dead and a woman is fighting for her life after a home caught fire on the city's South Side.

An woman arrived at her home near 56th and Mayfield and found it full of flames. She called 911 from a neighbor's home then ran inside the home to find her 90-year-old husband.

When firefighters arrived, they had to rescue both of them, who were suffering from smoke inhalation.

The medical examiner's office confirms the 89-year-old man was pronounced dead on the scene and an 85-year-old woman was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

The fire department officials say the fire likely started in the kitchen.
