8-year-old girl, 2 adults wounded in shooting at Bronzeville shopping center
Three people, including an 8-year-old girl, were wounded in a shooting on Wednesday afternoon at a shopping center in the Bronzeville neighborhood.
Police said that, around 4:45 p.m., a dark-colored SUV pulled up to the victims at the Lake Meadows Shopping Center in the 3400 block of South King Drive, and started shooting.
Almost half a dozen windows were shattered at the Subway and combined Dunkin and Baskin-Robbins. Bullet holes were also seen through the glass. The whole corner was taped off for hours.
An 8-year-old girl was shot in the foot and was taken to Comer Children's Hospital in good condition. A 24-year-old man was shot in the arm, chest, and groin and was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition. A 28-year-old woman was shot in the knee and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition.
One man said he was inside the Dunkin when dozens of gunshots were being fired and saw the three people get shot. He said when he left, the three were on the ground, and he walked away with cuts from the shattered glass on his hands.
The shooting happened across the street from Urban Prep Charter Academy and an elementary school. People in the nail salon next door say they heard the stream of gunshots, and businesses nearby went on lockdown for 15 minutes.
Ruwaida Henri was leaving the LA Fitness next door as police were on scene. She said she does not feel safe.
"It's saddening to know that kids are almost never safe. I guess the bottom line: nobody is safe," she said.
As of Wednesday evening, no arrests were made. Area 1 detectives were investigating.
