On Tuesday, they rehearsed at First Unitarian Church, at 5650 S. Woodlawn Ave. in Hyde Park, for their Kennedy Center performance.
The tradition draws thousands to the neighborhood – delivering music, costumes, and props. But most importantly, the event draws hope.
The money will help address aging heating and water systems, upgrade ventilation systems, and add a rooftop solar system.
"You want people to have an ownership stake as the neighborhood gets stronger," said Lyneir Richardson, co-founder and CEO of Chicago TREND.
"Since I was a child, I knew I wanted to be a doctor. That was my childhood dream growing up in Nigeria," Dr. Motunrayo Adisa said.
"It's nurturing, it's nourishing. We want you to leave here feeling really good about the choices that you made," co-owner Britni DeLeon said.
