Wakefield Goes For 200th For Seventh Time

BOSTON (CBS) – Boston Red Sox starter Tim Wakefield is hoping the seventh time is the charm as he goes for his 200th career win Wednesday night in Toronto.

Wakefield (6-6, 4.95 ERA) has made eight appearances since his last win on July 24, going 0-3 with a 4.50 ERA in that stretch. He was relegated to the bullpen to make way for lefty Andrew Miller last week against the Rangers, although the knuckle-baller did make a relief appearance in the 10-0 Boston loss.

44 days after his first try, Wakefield gets another shot against a sub-500 team in the Toronto Blue Jays (70-72). It is his fifth straight start against a team with a losing record as he chases the career milestone.

Wakefield would become the 108th pitcher in Major League history and the 89th modern Major Leaguer (since 1900) to record 200 career victories.
