Keller @ Large: What Should Make A Comeback?
BOSTON (CBS) - Sometimes, the Sunday newspaper can be information overload – when it gets delivered, that is.
Looking it over for topics to raise with you, I sometimes depend on stumbling on a story that just leaps off the page and grabs me.
That method worked Sunday when I came upon the "On Clothing" column in the New York Times Magazine.
The headline read: "Can the turtleneck ever be cool again?" And the writer refers to a revival of that once-hip style as "retro-futurism."
I love the term "retro-futurism" – it sounds like something the Jetsons used to get to work.
And it raises a great question: what do we really want to see make a comeback, and what do we not want to relive?
For instance, I know it will never happen, but I wouldn't mind seeing the phone booth make a comeback.
We don't need phones in them anymore, but anything that would spare me the involuntary sharing of your phone conversation – and you of mine – would be a plus, don't you think?
On the down side, I wouldn't want to see disco music making a comeback, especially those whistles they used to blow. Once was enough for that.
This whole retro-futurism triage is more serious business than you may realize.
Bring back Star Wars? Yes.
The Flintstones? No.
The Jeb Bush campaign has asked voters if they want the 2000s back for an encore, and so far the feedback isn't encouraging.
Hillary and Bill Clinton hope you have better memories of the '90s.
The truth is, not everything that was big in the past deserves a rerun.
Yes, turtlenecks, this means you.
