Motorcyclist Charged With Hitting Trooper Held On $10K Bail
FOXBORO (CBS) -- The motorcycle driver who Massachusetts State Police say struck and seriously injured a trooper near Gillette Stadium Sunday afternoon was arraigned Monday afternoon in Wrentham District Court.
Jose Perez-Rodriguez, 25, of Everett, was ordered held on $10,000 cash bail.
State Police said Perez-Rodriguez was driving his 2009 Ducati motorcycle the wrong way down Route 1 in Foxboro around 4:25 p.m. Sunday after the Patriots game.
They say that's when he struck a trooper working a traffic detail near the P8 parking lot.
That trooper, Detective Captain Chris Wilcox, suffered a broken nose and fractured skull after being hit.
He was conscious when he was taken to Boston Medical Center, and was held there overnight. He is expected to recover.
Perez-Rodriguez was taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center after the crash, then booked at the State Police barracks in Foxboro on reckless operation charges.
On Monday, he was led into court still wearing his hospital gown.
State Police said he was driving erratically in the P6 parking lot on Route 1 Sunday, and fled from troopers who tried to catch him.
They said he drove against traffic in the northbound lane of Route 1 to get away from them, and then struck Captain Wilcox near the P8 parking lot entrance.
Perez-Rodriguez's lawyer, Frank Yee, said he did not "go at" Captain Wilcox on his motorcycle.
"He was driving at a high rate of speed, and he may not have had time to respond," said Yee in court. "There were no facts that said that he took any overt act."
Perez-Rodriguez also had his bail revoked for 90 days in a prior, similar case out of Malden District Court in June.
