Sutton Police Stop Multiple Drivers For Speeding Where Jogger Was Killed
SUTTON (CBS) – Police in Sutton are saying "enough is enough" after pulling over several drivers for going too fast in the same area where a jogger died last month. Millbury resident Daniel de Lima, 51, was killed in a hit-and-run on Singletary Avenue on August 14.
"We're still receiving reports of speeding, erratic operation and other traffic violations in the very same area that Mr. de Lima was struck and killed," Sutton police wrote on Facebook Monday.
A patrol officer monitoring the street on Sunday made "more than half of a dozen car stops," police said. One driver was clocked at 50 mph in the 35 mph zone.
Police used the hashtag "#enoughisenoughpeople" in their post.
Signs that read "slow down" and "we love Sutton Police" line Wilfred Tremblay's property.
"It's better to get there safe, than to not get there at all," Tremblay said. He is glad police are keeping an eye on Singletary Avenue. "I mean they're here all the time now trying to slow people down."
De Lima was hit in front of Tremblay's home. His wife discovered de Lima. "I mean to have a person die on your front lawn. It's tough to deal with," he said.
Joshua R. Nunnemacher of Sutton Police explained, "In that area and all around we just want people to slow down. That's the message. That's why we're out here."
"People think that they're in control of their vehicle when they're going 20, 15-20 miles over the speed limit and they really aren't," Nunnemacher added.
De Lima's family told WBZ-TV they appreciate that the police are stepping up enforcement in that area.
Shane Newman has been charged in the death of de Lima, whose family said he was an avid runner and beloved therapist. Newman was held on $250,000 bail in a court appearance last month.
