State Jail Employee Indicted For Stealing From Vending Machines In Dedham Area

DEDHAM (CBS) – A Bay State Correctional Center employee was indicted Friday on charges he stole more than $8,000 from vending machines.

Donald Packard, 36, of Brockton, was indicted by a Norfolk County Grand Jury on seven charges of breaking and entering into a depository of money and one charge of larceny over $250.

State Police assigned to the Attorney General's office say they were contacted by a Stoughton-based vending machine company after the company suspected the theft in May.

Packard has worked at Bay State Correctional Center since 2010. Before that, he worked for the Stoughton-based vending machine company.

Police say between Sept. 2011 and July 2012, Packard broke into and stole from vending machines located in Norwood, Westwood and Dedham.

Packard allegedly stole only from vending machines owned by the company he used to work for, police said. Each of those machines required a particular key that he used when he worked there.

Police say he kept the key and used it to steal money from the machines.

In July, Packard was arrested and arraigned in Dedham District Court. Packard was indicted Friday by a Norfolk County Grand Jury. He is due in Norfolk Superior Court for arraignment on October 19.
