Witnesses 'Went Like Mad' Toward Capsized Seaplane On NH Lake

RINDGE, N.H. (CBS) – Though firefighters initially believed 40 gallons of fuel had spilled into a New Hampshire lake after a plane flipped over while landing, it now appears there is no fuel in the water.

A small plane flipped over Tuesday night while landing on Lake Monomonac in Rindge.

Both men who were on board escaped injury and were pulled from the water by nearby boaters.

"As soon as it hit the water, it flipped over. A big splash," witness Don Wilson said. "Everybody on the lake who saw that jumped on their boats and went like mad for the airplane."

On Wednesday, the plane remained in the lake, surrounded by booms to prevent fuel from spreading around the lake.

Rindge Fire Department members told WBZ-TV's Anna Meiler, however, that it now appears no fuel leaked.

One witness said the pilot was bleeding from around his mouth when he emerged from the plane, but neither man suffered serious injuries.

It is unclear exactly when or how the plane will be removed from the lake.

"It could have been a lot worse," Wilson said.
