BOSTON (CBS) -- It didn't take long for the Red Sox to remedy their starting pitching surplus.

On Monday afternoon, the Red Sox completed a trade with the Mariners, sending Wade Miley and Jonathan Aro to Seattle in exchange for Carson Smith and Roenis Elias.

Miley, 29, went 11-11 with a 4.46 ERA in 2015, his only season in Boston, after the Red Sox sent Rubby De La Rosa and Allen Webster to Arizona to acquire him. The left-hander is 49-46 with a 3.95 ERA in his five-year career, averaging 32 starts per season over the past four years.

Elias is a 27-yar-old lefty who has made 49 big league starts over the past two years. He's 15-20 with a 3.97 ERA, striking out 240 batters over 279 innings.

Smith -- a 6-foot-6, 26-year-old right-hander, pitched in 70 MLB games last year, striking out 92 batters in 70 innings and converting 13 saves.

Last year, between Double-A and Triple-A, Aro compiled a 3.04 ERA in 74 innings pitched, striking out 72 batters. In six big league appearances, he had a 6.97 ERA in 10.1 IP.

Last week, the Red Sox shelled out a big-money deal to acquire Cy Young runner-up David Price, a move that instantly improved the rotation but also created a roster with one too many starting pitchers.
