Patriots Sign Free-Agent WR Nate Washington

By Matt Dolloff, CBS Boston

BOSTON (CBS) -- Patriots fans who have clamored for a field-stretching "deep threat" at wide receiver since the departure of Randy Moss may have finally gotten their wish. New England has agreed to terms with free-agent receiver Nate Washington, the team announced.

Washington, 32, who spent the first ten seasons of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Tennessee Titans, played in 14 games for the Houston Texans in 2015, catching 47 passes for 658 yards and four touchdowns. He is tied for 10th with Mike Wallace among active NFL players with 15.2 yards per reception in his career.

Considering the Patriots' spotty track record with veteran free-agent wide receivers, and Washington's one-dimensional skill set, there's no guarantee Washington even makes the team out of Training Camp. But the team has also struggled to find a wideout who can consistently execute big plays like go-routes since trading Moss, getting various results from the likes of Chad Ochocinco, Donte Stallworth, Aaron Dobson, and Brandon LaFell, sometimes even trying Matthew Slater in the role. Washington should at least be able to do that for Tom Brady when he needs it.
