Report: LSU's Mathieu Coming To New England For Workout

BOSTON (CBS) - With the NFL draft just a few weeks away, the New England Patriots will welcome one of the highest profile prospects to Gillette Stadium next week.

According to The Boston Herald's Jeff Howe, former LSU cornerback Tyrann Mathieu -- better known to college football fans as "Honey Badger" -- will visit with the Patriots on April 5.

The 5-foot-9, 186-pound Mathieu was a 2011 Heisman Trophy finalist, but was kicked out of school that summer for failing a drug test. Mathieu impressed at the NFL combine last month though, and said he hasn't smoked marijuana since last fall.

Mathieu could play anywhere in the defensive backfield, but is mostly seen as a slot corner. The Patriots re-signed their slot corner, Kyle Arrington, to a four-year deal during the off-season, but with questions surrounding second-year corner Alfonzo Dennard's April 11 sentencing it should come as no surprised the Patriots continue to show interest in Mathieu.

Bill Belichick has never been afraid of taking a talented player with problems in the past -- Dennard just the latest example -- so if the Patriots think Mathieu can help the team, they could take a chance on the projected mid-rounder come late-April.
