UMass Boston Vice Chancellor Dies From Injuries Suffered In Oxford Crash

OXFORD (CBS) – The Vice Chancellor of UMass Boston has died from injuries she suffered on Memorial Day when she and her boyfriend were hit by a car in a chain reaction crash.

Daniel Sullivan died Monday after being hit by a car while walking on the sidewalk of Sutton Ave. with his girlfriend, 52-year-old Gina Cappello.

Cappello, the Vice Chancellor of UMass Boston, died as a result of her injuries, the Worcester District Attorney's office announced on Wednesday.

Preliminary investigation showed that a 2010 Lexus lost control, hitting a 2011 Toyota Corolla.

The Toyota then was forced onto the sidewalk, hitting Sullivan and Cappello.

Following the crash, the son of the woman who was driving the Lexus told WBZ-TV she froze and lost control, calling it a "freak accident."

The crash remains under investigation.
