Authorities say a New Hampshire man has died in an accident at a Deerfield rail yard.

Northwestern District Attorney Elizabeth Scheibel says 35-year-old Kurt Ward of North Conway, N.H., was working with others on uncoupling a pair of freight cars at about 1:45 a.m. on Tuesday when he suffered a severe leg injury.

He was taken to Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield where he was pronounced dead.

Scheibel says Ward worked for Pan Am Railways.

An autopsy is scheduled to determine a cause of death but the district attorney says it appears to be an accident.

Deerfield police, the district attorney's office and the Federal Railway Administration are investigating.
