Nashua Police Seek Driver In Fatal Hit-And-Run Accident
NASHUA, N.H. (CBS) -- Police are trying to track down the driver who fatally struck a 63-year-old man in Nashua and then fled the scene.
Investigator say the victim, Robert Derome, suffered severe injuries to his head and pelvis when he was hit Sunday night at West Hollis and Pine Streets.
They say he was possibly walking in the street to avoid the icy sidewalks.
"The sidewalks are very dangerous," said David Tucker who lives nearby. "They are so icy. I slipped and fell last week and separated my shoulder."
Several pedestrians could be seen walking on the streets in the neighborhood Wednesday because ice covered much of the sidewalks.
"I'm trying to decide whether I want to walk on the street and get hit by a car," said Michael Boucher. "Or do I try to walk down the ice-covered sidewalks, maybe fall and break my neck or a leg."
Lisa Fauteux, director of public works for the city of Nashua, said crews focus on sidewalks along main roads as well as sidewalks that students use to get to school.
The city encourages homeowners and business owners to help out as well and clear the path in front of their property.
There are 214 miles of sidewalk in the city, and city crews only handle about a quarter.
"We don't have the resources," said Fauteux.
As for the Derome case, he had just stopped by the West Hollis Market minutes before the crash.
Clerk Hina Iqbal was likely the last to speak to him. Iqbal said she's saddened by the death of a loyal customer they called "Cigar Bob."
"It bothers me that nobody has come forward yet," said Iqbal.
