Mother, Son Hurt In Scituate House Fire, Officials Say

SCITUATE (CBS) -- Fire officials say a mother and her son were hurt in a two-alarm house fire Monday afternoon in Scituate.

The fire broke out around 1:30 p.m. at the home on Bailey's Island Road. Firefighters knew they were in for a challenge because there wasn't a hydrant nearby.

Scituate Fire chief John Murhpy told WBZ-TV's Bill Shields the nearest hydrant was 1,500 feet away from the blaze.

"This is one of the more remote places in town," he says, adding that it took several minutes just to get to the fire.

Firefighters were able to run a hose to the house and knock down the blaze.

The woman was trapped in a bathroom when firefighters got her out. She was rushed to a local hospital with unknown injuries.

Officials say the son suffered a cut hand and should be fine. They have not identified the victims.

Investigators say a candle started the fire in a bedroom.
