MBTA Unveils New T Designs Chosen By Public

BOSTON (CBS) — The results are in for the new MBTA designs, but there may be a problem with the online vote.

The transit agency unveiled new designs for more than 300 new Green, Orange and Red Line cars, which are set to replace older models that are in constant need of repair.

The agency had called on the public to pick between three sets of exterior designs for each line.

The MBTA tells The Boston Globe it is now investigating possible irregularities with the online vote. It seems there were some strange voting patterns and a lot of votes came from one IP address.

The Green Line option won with 89 percent of votes cast. The Orange Line option won with 41 percent of the vote, and the Red Line option won with 90 percent of the vote.

"The manufacture and delivery of new rail cars will go a long way to enhancing MBTA service that our customers deserve and expect," MassDOT Secretary Stephanie Pollack said in a public statement.

The new cars will also have more comfortable seating, and computer-controlled lighting, heating and cooling, the transit agency said.

The new cars are scheduled to roll out between 2017 and 2019.
