Ed Markey Defeats Kevin O'Connor In Massachusetts U.S. Senate Race

BOSTON (CBS) – Incumbent Ed Markey will be returning to the U.S. Senate for another term after defeating Republican challenger Kevin O'Connor on Election Day.

CBS News called the race for Markey less than 10 minutes after polls closed.

Markey, 74, has served for decades in Congress, first in the House and later the Senate.

Markey thanked his supporters on a livestream press conference, then promised to work towards a coronavirus relief bill, Medicare for All and the topic he is often most passionate about. "In the face of the existential climate crisis, our elected leaders listened to the young people, demanding change, trust them to lead the way and pass a Green New Deal," Markey said.

After defeating U.S. Rep. Joe Kennedy III in the Democratic primary, Markey ran against O'Connor, a lawyer from Dover.
