Mass. GOP, Warren Spar Over "Hick Vote" Comment

BOSTON (AP) -- Massachusetts Republicans are criticizing Democratic U.S. Senate hopeful Elizabeth Warren for pledging to seek the "hick vote" as she tries to unseat Republican Sen. Scott Brown.

Warren, who grew up in Oklahoma and teaches at Harvard University, made the comment about herself Friday, saying Republicans were casting her both as an elite and a hick.

Warren said: "I think I'm a new category, the elite hick." When pressed by an interviewer on the website Left Ahead who said he also grew up in Oklahoma and had been called a hick, Warren replied "I'm going for the hick vote here."

Massachusetts Republican Party spokesman Tim Buckley on Monday called the comments a revealing prism into Warren's elitist and arrogant worldview.

A spokesman for Warren called the remark self-deprecating and a lighthearted moment in an otherwise serious conversation.
