Fire In Lowell Spreads To 3 Homes, Displaces 25 People
LOWELL (CBS) – Twenty-five people in Lowell are without someplace to live Thursday night after a fast-moving fire spread to three homes.
Firefighters in Lowell faced bitter cold temps and strong winds as they battled the massive blaze. Crews responded to Arthur Street just after 5:30 p.m.
"There were some embers flying around the neighborhood and the two houses that are a total loss are very close together," said Lowell Fire Chief Jeff Winward.
The ice also caused some "slip and fall incidents" and frozen hydrants, Winward said.
The Lowell Fire and Police Departments were present, but the Department of Public Works was also there. Workers were salting nearby side streets to make sure they were passable for first responders as water trickled down the road and froze.
One firefighter was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation but is expected to be okay.
Everyone made it safely out of the homes and the Red Cross is now assisting the victims.
It is unclear what started the fire.
