GLENDALE, Ariz. (CBS) -- The 2014 Patriots season ended with a Super Bowl victory, but it will always be remembered for where it was at the end of September.
It was after a Week 4 loss in Kansas City on a Monday night, a 41-14 thumping at the hands of the Chiefs, when many members of the media pulled the plug on the Patriots' season. One such media member was ESPN's Trent Dilfer, the former Ravens quarterback who said, "We saw a weak team. The New England Patriots, let's face it, they're not good anymore."
Following that loss, the Patriots rattled off seven straight wins and won 10 of 11. Now, they're Super Bowl champions.
Though Dilfer later admitted he was wrong, the initial comments clearly stuck in the head of some Patriots. Julian Edelman, after catching nine passes for 109 yards and a touchdown, made it a point to take an unprompted jab at Dilfer.
"What'd Trent Dilfer say? The Patriots are the worst team? They can't win?" Edelman asked reporters while seated at his postgame podium at University of Phoenix Stadium. "It's unbelievable to hear that man say that. It's embarrassing. For him."
If winning the Super Bowl was the touchdown, then those comments about Dilfer had to have been the celebratory spike of the football.
