Husband Sues In NH Power Shut Off Death
CONCORD, N.H. (AP) -- The husband of a New Hampshire woman who died after National Grid shut off power to her oxygen machine and her home is suing the utility, saying it was wrong to disconnect service.
Fifty-four-year-old Kay Phaneuf of Salem, who hadn't paid her electricity bill, died on June 24, 2010, three days after her husband, Stephen Phaneuf, found her unconscious. Her account had a medical protection notice intended to prevent such a shutoff in the past, but it had lapsed.
Phaneuf's lawyers provided a copy of the complaint to The Associated Press on Tuesday. The suit is expected to be filed this week in Rockingham County Superior Court.
The state Public Utilities Commission said Dec. 9 that while Phaneuf's death was tragic, investigations found that National Grid did nothing criminally wrong.
