Hate Messages Written On Several NH Homes

CONCORD, N.H. (CBS) - Hateful messages targeting African immigrants has people in Concord, NH outraged.

Some of the victims now fear for their safety. The long messages contain anti-refugee statements.

In front of one woman's home, the person wrote, "the subhumans in this house are enjoying a free ride."

Emelyne, who lives in Concord with her family, saw the words when she woke up Sunday morning.

"I feel bad," she said.

WBZ-TV's New Hampshire Bureau Chief Lauren Leamancyzk reports:

She and her mother came from a refugee camp in Tanzania. They escaped war in Congo. But it's these words that make Emelyne fear for her life.

"I'm just waiting, maybe to die. That's it," she told WBZ-TV.

The hateful messages were discovered Sunday morning on three homes in Concord, all places where African immigrants live. They say things like "you are not welcome here" and call the residents "cursed."

Neighbors are outraged and stunned.

"They seem like great people. They don't do anything to make you mad," said Emelyne's next door neighbor Nicki Wells.

"I think this represents a really small closed minded population," says Candy Jackson whose daughter attends school with Emelyne's daughter. "I certainly don't think it represents the community of Concord."

Flowers and encouraging note were left at the door of a local pastor who was also targeted. Both he and Emelyne say they've never had anything like this happen in Concord before.

Police are tracking down leads. New Hampshire does have a law which requires enhanced penalties for people convicted of crimes when hate is at the root.
