Keller @ Large: Why Are So Many People So Sensitive?
BOSTON (CBS) - What a nation of sensitive little snowflakes we've become.
By now we're all familiar with the litany of absurd controversies that just keep on coming, people getting offended by a design on a coffee cup or a Halloween costume. There has been much richly-deserved ridicule of college campuses where special "safe rooms" – complete with stuffed animals and comfy security blankets - are set aside for the sanctuary of tender flowers who might become upset by a controversial speaker.
The latest offender –Hampshire College, where the American flag has been removed because, according to the president, it has become a "symbol of fear" for some students.
Mommy, Daddy, come pick me up right away!
But it turns out it's not just knee-jerk lefties who get upset way too easily.
By now you've heard all about how Vice President-elect Mike Pence was booed by some in the audience at a performance of "Hamilton." It didn't appear to bother Pence, but it did bother President-elect Trump, who whined on Twitter that the theater "must always be a safe place."
And if he hasn't already, Trump may soon tweet his agony over being booed by some onlookers as he left a meeting at the New York Times Tuesday.
Oh, the sheer horror!
Sorry Mr. President-elect, but here's where I draw the line.
Booing is as American as it gets.
It is the purest expression of free speech. I can't imagine going to a pro sports event without the freedom to boo, usually the refs or the opposition but sometimes even the home team.
So my advice to Trump, the kids at Hampshire and everyone else who seems unable to stand even the most minimal heat – wait outside, and let the rest of us handle the kitchen.
